Real change for children will not happen until we, as citizens and voters, insist that our elected officials make children and schools a top political priority.
Last year, our very 1st year - Stand Members Won our First Local Campaign!
Stand for Children members convinced the city of Worcester to take two important steps:
- Increase its contribution to the Worcester Public Schools from .2% to .5% above the state mandated minimum - $1.15 million for 2008-09.
- Grant an additional $450,000 to public schools, garnered from the city's contingency account and monies saved under other city line items.
After implementing these funds and applying a savings generated from other budget areas, Worcester Public schools reached level funding for the first time in six years.
The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports, "District 2 Councilor Philip P. Palmieri said, 'I congratulate the activists.' He said that without the [Stand for Children] activists the council would not have further increased the school budget. 'They lit the fuse,' he said, urging them to 'keep our feet to the fire. Don't let up.'" Read the complete article.
